How Elijah Sees Daddy

June 6th, 2010

This is Elijah’s first drawing that is actually recognizable as the thing he intended to draw.  There have been a few other ones, which, once he explained them to me I could see it.  But this one, it’s obvious.

It’s Nick!

Maybe it’s just because I’m his Mom, but I think this is one of the cutest, funniest drawings I have ever seen. I love it. So much.

Sewing Day

June 3rd, 2010

It has been a full 10 years at the least since I have sewn a dress. I have busted out the sewing machine a few times here and there, but not for anything too big. Today was a completely pleasant experience to bring me back into the realm of sewing.

This is what I made:

This dress is for Emmy’s Confirmation next week, so I am especially glad it turned out! I had all those old fears pop up… because this dress had everything. Lining, pleats, pockets, waistband, zipper, etc. Wow, this tested my sewing skillz! But I have my mom to thank. After all those years of pushing me to sew, I was able to get through this with minimal mistakes.

But can I tell you another secret to my success? I had help. Lots and lots of help. First of all, the thing I dislike most about sewing is cutting out all the pieces. Robin did that. Plus, Mika and Robin played with the kids the whole time I was sewing. And then I had my helper Emmy who cut out some more stuff for me, did the ironing (which I also dislike), and all those sorts of things. Plus, PLUS, (as if this wasn’t enough already), my kitchen got cleaned, and a yummy lasagna was brought for me, and lunch made for everyone.

So yeah, pretty much I was completely spoiled while sewing. I could sew under these conditions quite often. Quite often indeed.

Magnets

January 22nd, 2010

Here is another Christmas craft I did- homemade magnets.  I did this bug set for Erin (minus a couple that I need to redo because Peyton tried to suck them apart).  It is such a simple, fun craft!  Just get those glass half-marbles usually used for the bottom of a vase, get some cool paper, and some magnets.  Cut the paper to fit the glass, glue it on, and then glue the magnets on!  It was also suggested you can make them with real photographs, but I am not sure how this would look as the glass magnifies the picture in sometimes disproportionate ways.  I made 3 large with 3 small, and they fit perfectly into an empty Altoids tin.

Princess Crowns

January 8th, 2010

This year for Gillian, Elena, and Emma I made some princess crowns.  All the girls liked them, but Gillian loved it.  I think Elena and Emma just aren’t old enough yet to enjoy playing with them for long periods of time, but they do seem to know quite well that it makes them looks “pretty”.  Gillian was happy to pose for me when I asked, she knew exactly what to do!
