All Fired Up

November 11th, 2009

I rarely write opinion pieces for my blog, but recent events this weekend and the subsequent news articles about it have got me all fired up.  As I am sure you all know, the Health Care Bill passed in the House on Saturday night, by a slim margin.  The only reason it passed was because Pelosi finally agreed to allow the Stupak ammendment to be voted on, which is otherwise known as the Abortion Ban.  Without getting into what I think about Universal Health Care, or this Bill in particular, there have been a couple of things repeated in the news since this passed that have rubbed me entirely the wrong way.

The first is this:  People who support abortion being part of health care are acting as though anyone who voted for, or pushed for, the Stupak Amendment were being sneaky, tricky, and mean.  Excuse me?  WE are the sneaky ones?  Currently, there is a LAW that bans abortions from receiving federal funds.  Those in support of abortion in health care were seeking to CHANGE THIS LAW by sneaking it into the health care bill.  Those opposed were merely DEFENDING THE STATUS QUO.  There was no trickery going on.  Stop acting like we just took something away that women have always had.  This country has never made it’s citizens pay for the murder of innocent children, and I pray it never will.

The second things that has just ruffled my feathers is the phrase “Reproductive Rights” when referring to abortion.  What does that phrase even mean?  An important note: You had reproductive rights before you went and made a baby.  You have none after that child is conceived. None.  The phrase is disingenuous, entirely political, and extremely deceptive.  The Stupak Amendment did not take away a women’s right to: not have sex, use NFP, condoms, or even birth control (setting aside the discussion of whether or not it is abortive).  Those are reproductive choices, and they are still available to women everywhere.  Aborting a baby is not a reproductive choice, it is a choice to kill another human.

Understand that abortion opponents won a small battle this weekend, but it is not the only battle to be had.   Viciously Pro-Choice Politicians have already signed a letter to Pelosi to have it removed or they vote no, are pressuring the President to in turn pressure Senators and Congressmen, are asking for the IRS to penalize the Catholic Church because the Bishops spoke out against abortion, and so much more.  Regardless of whether you are in favor of Universal Health Care, please pray that NO MATTER WHAT, abortion is not funded.

Loved this post! This was a good read and I am anxiously awaiting Laura’s response :)

    Good post, Krista.
lol, Stef. I guess you’re just trying to get Laura fired up too by that comment. :)
The other thing I *hate* about this argument… when will they ever include things like fertility research/treatment as 100% covered? Um yeah, never. I don’t understand how killing babies is allowed but helping those of us who want to have children & can’t isn’t along the same lines.
Not like I would vote for the bill if it *did* include that, of course… I’m just sayin’. lol. :)

Well said, Krista. And I, like Melissa, can’t see how they can fund abortions and not fertility treatments. We live in a very sick world…

I’m just curious what Laura would have to say on this - she typically has a very sound mind when it comes to these things :)

Charlotte is right - we live in a very sick world.

Haha, thanks Faith. You might be seeing more of this side of me, I have been feeling inundated with stupid things people around me (on the internet) are saying and sometimes need an outlet besides trying to fruitlessly battle them.

You ladies are right, how twisted that helping people with their fertility is NOT funded, yet killing babies is. So very very sad. I feel another post brewing on the idea that some scientists/doctors are pushing population control in deceptive ways.
