Already?

January 9th, 2010

This week Elena has been taking off her diaper and wanting to roam free.  Because I am a hippy mom, you know, I just let her and see how it goes.  I have noticed something interesting.  She does pee on the floor (yeah, big surprise there) but first she looks at me and tells me “poo-poo-ie!”  So, I have started whisking her away to the toilet (even though most of it comes out right when she says that word).  Well today, she ripped off her diaper again, and was just chilling with no accidents.  She looked at me and told me she needed to go “poo-poo-ie”, and so I went over to grab her.  Much to my surprise, there was no tinkle on the floor!  So, we went to the toilet which she sat on for 5 seconds concentrating very hard.  She jumped on and off about 5 times before actually peeing in the toilet!  Wow! Okay potty training experts out there, does this mean I should just dive in and train her?  Or should I just be casual about it for a while and see what happens?

It looks like she’s training herself! My advice is encourage her and I bet you’ll be diaper free in no time. The Claydons did the same thing with Trinity, and I think she was trained in a couple of days!

I agree with Brittany. Just be encouraging and let HER tell you when she needs to go and then when she goes on the potty — clap, scream, sing; whatever your family does to celebrate pee and poop going :)
Rachel was this way and I really should’ve jumped on it when she was wanting to. I had morning sickness though and chose laying on the couch over potty “helping” her :( She still did a great job at 21 months!

Kara has been doing what Elena is doing. Its so weird to me b/c Ethan never did this. He had NO interest until he was 2 1/2.
She pulls at her diaper (she can’t really get it off with her clothes on… I guess Elena is more coordinated :) but she’ll pull and say “sinky” and lately she’s bringing us new diapers and wipes! She goes on the potty every night, before bath time and I’m thinking of getting her potty chair out and letting her roam naked and just see how she does. We’ll have to crank the heater up though :)

I think potty helping is a better way to say it :) kids just need encouragement and not to feel like the potty is a gross or scary place. I had to stop flipping out over public bathrooms b/c I think its what freaked Ethan out about going. Seriously. As soon as I let go and reminded myself that he won’t die from using one, he began going potty like a champ. He still has issues about public bathrooms that I think I, sadly gave him :(

I’m working on it! I’m a work in progress :)

Praise the Lord your child is a wonder. One child in diapers is enough for you. Roll with it.

as a side note… I read in my Baby Center update (they send me one once a month for Kara) typical ages where kids show interest in potty training? 15-20 months old. Who would’ve thought?!
